Here’s what Barbara has to say about the book:

About Basic Observations

If you want to live a happy life, it is vitally important that you have a relatively realistic assessment of this thing called Life because then you can be more realistic about the things in your life which you can actually do something about – and you can also be more realistic when it comes to the things in your life which are beyond your control.  Not understanding the difference between these two things causes so many people so much pain and anguish in their daily lives.

So this is what this little book is about. It will help you be able to identify what you can actually change in your life and what you can’t.  And this is why I call this information Some Basic Observations About This Thing Called Life. These Basic Observations describe the set-up here, the way Life is, and the impersonal mechanisms or principles behind the way things are. When you understand these Basic Observations and have confirmed them for yourself – through your own observation – you will then be able to use this information to live more wisely and happily.

In addition, understanding these Basic Observations will greatly increase your ability to get along with your fellow human beings. In other words, this information can greatly improve all your relationships with your partner, family, friends and colleagues. In fact, my latest book, “Healthy Models for Relationships – The Basic Principles Behind Good Relationships” grew naturally out of understanding the Basic Observations described here. Because when we have this information and understand its significance, we can be more realistic in terms of what we can expect from ourselves and other people.

So in brief there are three main reasons why these Basic Observations are so important.
1) We cannot change the way things are – we cannot change the Nature of Reality. This means we cannot change the set-up here in this world – here in Life. It is what it is. Life is what it is.
2) We can navigate more wisely through Life when we understand the set-up and the way things are. In other words, when we understand some of the basic, impersonal mechanisms or Laws of the Universe.
3) And finally: It will be easier for us to navigate through life when we have a more realistic idea of what we can actually do something about and what is not in our power to change.

I hope this little book will help you live a little bit more sanely and happily in this world.
